chigusairoJust finished watching "After Life" or Wonderful Life (the English release title is changed for obvious reasons.)
I liked it, but I was kinda thinking I was going to be more "moved" than I was since the recommendation for this movie was high and I've been meaning to watch it all semester (it's also technically my job...^^;;;). I think it would suit a Japanese class pretty well. And there's several things I look at to suggest that (I'm new to doing this): length, interesting and diverse characters, action, and of course, difficulty of language. I couldn't really judge the difficulty of language so fairly this time because the library's copy doesn't allow the subs to be taken down....and when there are English subs I don't really trust that my estimation of the Japanese in the same way because there's more context. (and I really can't help reading the subtitles, although I'm also following the audio as best as I can) Still, just enough of "new" vocabulary to me (we're looking for videos for upper level learners so...I'm probably a good "guinea pig"), idioms, conversational ambiguities, diverse grammar patterns, and clear diction. And plenty of discussion topics to be found: history, philosophy, life, death, happiness, movie-making, religion, etc. It could be a little more challenging...but...I think of the three movies I've watched this semester this one is a definite candidate.
I'm kinda embarrassed that I haven't really seen many people from this movie before. Except for...Iseya (who plays HIMSELF, wtf. XD I can't help but think if Iseya had done Morita from Hachikuro in 1998 it wouldn't have seemed like such a mis-cast to me.) and the really old lady (Oh man...she's had some great old lady extra parts in other movies.) I'm not sure why the "red shoes" lady isn't listed in the cast on imbd (I didn't take the effort to look for a different source.). Of course, this isn't really a reflection on the cast, more of my lack of interest in watching movies. Yeah, I have no idea why I'm working on this. ^^;
