something I just didn`t realize.
Nov. 9th, 2005 04:19 pmI just wanted to post about something kinda insignificant. Bear with me.
My elder host sister, Mizuho, has a subscription to ST which is a paper in for Japanese learners of English. It`s never that interesting for me as there`s no meat to the articles and there`s a huge section for such-and-such movie scripts, but I`ve picked it up from the kitchen table for the past few months just to see what language-learning newspapers are like. Picking up some random Japanese vocab. from the sidebar isn`t bad either. Yesterday, I flipped to the back to read the Luann comic strip. Mizuho asks me if I knew of Luann before reading ST/coming to Japan. Well, yes of course because who doesn`t read the Sunday Funnies in my house?! Actually, my hometown paper stopped printing Luann several years ago (and replaced it with Dennis the Menace, which unless you`re a dinosaur reminiscing, isn`t any fun at all). I liked Luann back in the day and I hated our local newspaper for taking it away. Mind, I was...14(?) at the time. There are much better reasons to dislike the local paper, as I have now discovered.
Anyway, I had never thought about the reason why ST prints Luann (btw, they also have Dilbert). Mizuho said that by reading Luann she feels that in some way, ordinary situations that American teens encounter is similar to Japanese teens. That she can relate to Luann. That we`re not so completely different, after all. It`s a sweet thing to say and I was just kinda baffled for a few moments.
--the end--
I guess I should go home now. We have to eat dinner early because host family`s friends are coming over for dessert at 7ish (when we normally eat). Why can`t we just have dinner together, I do not know. I also don`t have time to sit around politely listening to the conversation until who knows when. My presentation for tomorrow is all written out, but I haven`t been able to practice. I wonder if anyone will mind if I just slip away to my room and `talk to myself.` Heh.
Friday is a holiday. But just for Kansai Gaidai! I`m going to get to have fun going to Kyoto for sightseeing. And then Saturday going with host mom to Nara. To hell with studying!
